  • Mammoths are extinct animals and are relatives of today's elephants. These large mammals lived during the last ice age and may have died off when the weather became warmer and their food supply changed. Humans may also be partly responsible for their disappearance due to hunting.
  • There were several species of mammoths, including the Columbian mammoths, which lived in North America. Remains of a Columbian mammoth have been found in southern California in the La Brea Tar Pits. Woolly mammoths were the last remaining mammoth species and died off about 3,700 years ago.
